SMART CENTER RECEIVES STATE AWARD
Wednesday, May 24, 2000
A program that places computer centers in lower-income neighborhoods
in Albion received a Michigan Week Award this week.
Albion's Smart Centers are equipped with computers linked to the
Internet. Children can visit the center to play games or do
homework, while adults can use the technology to draft a resume or
acquire job skills.

Information
technology is driving the new economy, but not
everyone is benefiting. The Smart Centers
address the need for everybody to have access to
new technologies. While the number of Americans
with access to computers and the Internet is
growing at an exponential rate, there is also a
growing split between the information haves and
have-nots. A project of the
Forks Initiative
and operated by the
Albion Housing Commission, the Technology
Centers are open to the general public as well
as to residents. Call for current
schedules (629.2511). |

Facts
In a society that increasingly relies on
computers and the Internet to deliver
information and enhance communication, we need
to make sure that all Albion community members
have access. Our local, state, national and
global economies demand it. Ready access to
telecommunication tools produces the kind of
technology literate work force that enables
Albion to continue with a place in the economic
main stream. |

Implications
The Smart Centers provide individuals
without telecommunication information and
computers, access to the new technologies. No
longer are community members without technology
resources, stuck on a plateau with few
opportunities and dimming prospects for Internet
and computer information. The Smart Centers
provide the competitive information technology
asset, now and in the future, the ready access
to information is a dynamic dimension to shaping
economic growth and stability. Ensuring access
to the fundamental tools of the digital economy
is one of the most significant investments
Albion can make. Our community's most valuable
resource is its people. Our small and large
businesses are only as good as their workers.
Highly skilled, well-educated workers generate
profitable businesses. |
