Garden Party 2002 Committee
The Garden Party Committee, under the direction of board member Jean Voncina
and Judy Maynard, both of Brick Alley Country Store, has been hard at work
getting ready for the June 22nd event. This year’s Garden Party will take
place on the fourth Saturday of June (one week later than in previous years)
from 10 am to 4 pm.
The highlight of the Garden Party will be a parade of United States military
uniforms from wars and conflicts since the Civil War. Bryan Downey is loaning
us the uniforms and other war memorabilia for display.
The committee plans to have the National Guard post the colors with a gun
salute followed by speeches by local dignitaries.
Elm Street, on the south side of the Museum, will be closed for a vendor’s
marketplace of arts, crafts, and garden-related items. Antique cars will be on
display, and for the first time, there will be an antique fire engine.
Demonstrations of crafts from the Victorian period, an old time calliope, and
a monkey grinder can be enjoyed throughout the day.
Now is the time to begin working on your handmade garden hat to enter the
Garden Hat Contest, now in its fourth year. There is a children’s category
too. Prizes will be awarded. For more information on the Garden Hat Contest,
call 629-4994. For more on the Hat contest, see below.

FIREFIGHTING EXHIBIT
Firefighting enthusiasts of all ages will have a rare opportunity to see a
unique century old firefighting invention at this year's Gardner House
Museum Garden Party. This unique invention, developed in 1885, and built
in Memphis, Michigan, will be on display on June 22nd from 10 a.m. until
4 p.m. at 509 South Superior Street, Albion, Michigan. The Garden Party
is free and open to the public.
The city of Hanover, Michigan, purchased the machine from Memphis, Michigan
in 1904 for $35.00. This new fangled machine promised a high pressure water
spray to help put out fires. Today's visitors will find this interesting
because the method used is chemical not mechanical. It had an 80-gallon
tank that held water and soda. On top of the tank was a glass container
that held chemicals. When firefighters set up the novel invention at a
fire they turned it upside down, mixing the two ingredients. This built up
pressure forcing the water to spray out onto the fire.
Eventually better fire fighting equipment was developed and this
apparatus fell into disuse, disintegrating in a field until Dick Greiner
and two friends from Hanover, decided to refurbish it in 1997. Don't miss
this once in a century opportunity!
