The original Carnegie building, now the Childrens Room, was constructed in 1919. An addition built in 1976 provided more space as well as handicapped access at the main entrance on Ash Street. Elevator service is available at all levels.
Some street parking is available on Ash
Street and Superior Street, with additional parking in the public lot on the corner of Ash
Street and Ionia.
Anyone may use the librarys collections in the building. However, a library card is required to check materials out. You may apply for a library card if you live or own a business or property in the librarys service area, which includes the City of Albion, Albion Township and Sheridan Township. These areas support the library with tax monies.
Jackson County residents may apply for library cards under an agreement with the Jackson District Library.
If you live outside the librarys service area, you may purchase a card for a yearly fee.
Cardholders are responsible for all
materials they check out and for paying fines and/or replacement costs. The maximum fine
per item is $2.00.
The Librarys collections include books, magazines, art prints, videocassettes, books on tape, CDs, DVDs, large print books and reference materials. Informal exchange collections allow patrons to trade paperbacks, magazines and puzzles. The public has access to the Internet from Library computer work stations.
Most books, magazines, CDs, and books on tape circulate for three weeks. High demand books circulate for two weeks. Videocassettes and DVDs check out for one week. Most items may be renewed, in person or over the phone, if no one else is waiting. Art prints check out for four months and are not renewable.
Materials for genealogy and local
history research are housed in the Local History Rooms on the top floor of the
library. Please call the library for open hours.
Interlibrary loan through the Woodlands Library Cooperative allows patrons to borrow materials from other libraries.
The Forks Initiative is a community network. Its mission is to provide local access to electronic information that meets the diverse educational, cultural, and informational needs of our community equitably and cost effectively.
One of the projects of the Forks Initiative, paid for with W. K. Kellogg and HUD funds, is the automation of the Library's collection. You may view the public and college collections not only from the libraries but from home or work over the Internet. You may check the catalogs and your own library record. Community users age 18 or over who have a card and are in good standing at the Public Library may get a card at the Albion College Library.
Computers for word processing and Internet access are available in the Adult Room and Childrens Room.
Meeting rooms are available for use by community organizations. Call the Library at 629-3993 to reserve rooms.
In the interest of providing community information the Library posts announcements on Channel 10, a public access channel. Any local nonprofit organization with a public service announcement may send it to the Library. Forms to submit an announcement are available here.

The Friends are a volunteer organization that promotes library use, raises money, and sponsors programs.
Membership forms are available in the library. The Friends major fundraiser is an annual "non-ball". They also host a booksale every other year during the Festival of the Forks.
